Passive House specialists Loadingdock5 began work on their latest project in Greenpoint back in 2014, but things have been pretty slow-going since then. Thankfully, the ultra energy-efficient building located at 152 Freeman Street just got a permit renewal by the Department of Buildings, which hopefully means that Brooklyn will be celebrating yet another super sustainable building very soon.
Based out of Brooklyn, Loadingdock5 is known for its passive house projects, which are built to strict energy standards. Their ongoing project in Greenpoint, known as Haus, will have seven 700-square-foot apartments. According to the architects, the first floor unit will have a private rear garden while the others will each have a large balcony. All of the tenants will also be able to share a common rooftop space.

Although passive design is not as exclusive as it was years ago, the Haus project is a true test of affordable sustainable design in NYC. According to the architect’s website, “Haus will instead be a true Every Man experiment, and a good gauge of how reasonable it is to expect that even people with very modest budgets can build a Passive House.”
