Following a public competition for the design of the new Fulton Center, JCDA’s winning entry was built upon an architectural concept by Grimshaw Architects, in collaboration with ARUP. Grimshaw Architects designed a three-story glazed pavilion around a dome structure with a 53-feet wide skylight known as the oculus. The oculus is inclined to the southern sky and decorated with glass lenses to capture light and redirect it into the subway system below.

The redesigned station is an important hub for more than 300,000 transit riders who use the center’s 11 subway lines and New Jersey PATH connection every day. For the purpose of adapting to various conditions, ARUP developed no less than 815 unique scenarios dependent on differences in air pressure, indoor temperature and movement through the station.
