Medical facilities are, generally speaking, rather cold spaces, but they don’t have to be that way. Kengo Kuma and Associates has released their plans to replace an aging medical center in southwest Tokyo with a bright, modern building that peacefully coexists with the natural landscape. The new Seijo Kinoshita Hospital will have an updated maternity ward, and the building design will be wrapped around a gorgeous green space.
Introducing green spaces to medical facilities certainly helps bring warmth and life into a place that is often the opposite. Kuma’s design for the new hospital places a landscapes garden at its center, with floor to ceiling windows positioned around the perimeter of the green space.
According to the renderings, the hospital’s exterior will be clad in timber louvres. These will provide shade in addition to controlling the vantages from inside the building, making the most of the surrounding landscape.
The architects plan to rely on natural light for as many interior spaces as possible, including individual patient rooms. The new Seijo Kinoshita Hospital will be the first medical facility in the architecture firm’s portfolio, and it is expected to be completed in 2017.
