The Howard Hughes Corporation has had a major hand in the push for the revitalization of the South Street Seaport area. However, the project was put on hold two years ago due to major opposition to the 50-story tower proposed by the corporation, which would have required the demolition of much of the historic Fulton Market structure.

As far as the market revamp, much of the discord has to do with signage. The Landmarks Preservation Commission can’t dictate what exterior signs can say, but they are considerably strict when it comes to size. Two years ago, the LPC approved the SHoP Architects-designed revamp of the 1983 structure, and now that updated renderings for signage have been approved, it looks as if the project is one step closer to fruition.
According to the new renderings, the new Fulton Market exterior will have eight signs, three for the iPic Theaters multiplex, two for the bar The Tuck Room, and three for future tenants, labeled “Brand XYZ”.
