Just 47 miles north of Manhattan, you could commute home to the Massaro House on Petra Island just in time for dinner, that is if you have a boat or helicopter! The 5,000 square foot house was designed by Wright in 1949 for engineer A.K. Chahroudi, but never came to fruition, as the engineer couldn’t afford the $50,000 budget. Wright instead designed a small cottage for Chahroudi, which is now the current guest house. Joseph Massaro then bought the island along with Wright’s original plans, and had the home built as Wright intended from 2003-2007.

A signature design of Wright, the home boasts his largest cantilevered deck that juts out over Lake Mahopac. Sitting on 11 acres, the 5,000 square foot home is encircled with 2,000 square feet of decks, as well as the guest house that Chahroudi once lived in.

Like many of his other homes, the architect designed many living areas to incorporate the native rock the home is built on, into the interior. Guests are greeted by a 12 foot by 60 foot rock in the main foyer. More rock appears in the bathroom and kitchen.

The entire home is lined with windows, to not only maximize daylight, but to accentuate the natural beauty of the lake and island surrounding the home. The home is furnished with Wright designed pieces, as the architect intended, but was given a modern upgrade with energy efficient climate control and radiant floor heating.
