Mysterious new Times Square benches hide a “powerful” secret

    Although <a href="http://snohetta.com/" target="_blank">Snøhetta Architects'</a> revamp of New York's Time Square may not transform the iconic landmark completely, the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/sn%C3%B8hetta-unveils-plans-to-redesign-times-square-pedestrian-plazas/" target="_blank">massive reconstruction project</a> will bring quite a few noticeable changes to the area. In addition to swanky new pavement and upgraded underground infrastructure, the Norwegian design team is installing 11 new granite benches that will not only add to the pedestrian experience, but will also upgrade the popular plaza's ability to entertain.

    The plaza's new two-toned custom pavement will add character to the design.

    Each granite block, which will range from 30- to 50-feet long, will hide a system of fiber-optic cables and conduits.

    Each bench will be connected to the city's power grid and will have the capacity powering anything from an electric guitar to a full-on rock concert, something quite common in the plaza.
