The Hegeman-Cook+Fox<a href="http://www.commonground.org/our-buildings/the-hegeman/" target="_blank">The Hegeman</a> is a new residential community with studio apartments for low-income and formerly homeless individuals in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Designed by <a href="http://www.cookplusfox.com/" target="_blank">Cook + Fox Architects</a> for <a href="http://www.commonground.org/" target="_blank">Common Ground Community</a>, the project features a slew of sustainable features aimed at providing a healthy, energy-efficient and sustainable environment. With LEED-Silver certification anticipated, the building replaces a parking lot on Hegeman Avenue and adds a green roof, as well as private and public garden space at street level.1
The Hegeman-Cook+FoxThe <a href="http://www.commonground.org/our-buildings/the-hegeman/" target="_blank">Hegeman Residence</a> provides permanent, affordable housing for single adults in the under-resourced neighborhood of Brownsville, Brooklyn.2
The Hegeman-Cook+FoxThis is the first project for <a href="http://www.commonground.org/" target="_blank">Common Ground Community</a> developed under their Green Campaign, which emphasizes good health and indoor air quality, restorative and biophilic design, and best practices to save tenants money on energy bills.3
The Hegeman-Cook+FoxThe building provides studio apartments for 100 formerly homeless single adults and 61 low-income working adults.4
The Hegeman-Cook+FoxThe studios have natural daylighting, views to green space, non-toxic furniture and are each individually metered to encourage energy conservation.5
The Hegeman-Cook+FoxManhattan-based Cook + Fox developed the plan to convert the former parking lot into a five-story brick building capped with a 3,400 square feet green roof and a photovoltaic system that generates electricity for outdoor lighting.6
The Hegeman-Cook+FoxThe building is constructed of economical brick masonry and features two wings connected by a central glass atrium.7
The Hegeman-Cook+FoxThe ground floor provides shared common space, a fitness room, computer lab, and laundry facilities, which are supported by social supportive services and administration offices.8
The Hegeman-Cook+FoxOn the ground floor behind the building is a private garden for residents connected to a public community garden for growing vegetables.9
