HIVE: Bleecker Street Subway Station Gets Decked Out with Color-Changing LED Light Sculpture

Villereal explains that his work explores the brain’s hard coded desire to understand and make meaning.

Riders will be able to identify and track the color elements and patterns that move across the ceiling.

At this junction, the LED sculpture overhead will send waves of bright color across the outline of each hexagonal shape while passengers scurry to meet their connecting trains.

The Bleecker Street station <a href="http://www.boweryboogie.com/2012/07/peeking-behind-the-plywood-at-long-delayed-bleecker-street-superstation/">has been closed</a> for renovations of a new transfer point that will connect the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRT_Lexington_Avenue_Line">IRT </a>and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IND_Sixth_Avenue_Line">IND</a> subway lines.

Commuters passing through Manhattan's Bleecker street station might feel like they've stepped into a rave, but the flashing fluorescent tubes overhead aren't glowsticks - they're actually a series of color-changing LED light tubes called "Hive" by artist <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/leo-villareal-to-create-giant-glowing-led-buckyball-for-madison-square-park/">Leo Villareal</a>. The MTA commissioned Villareal, who is known for working with light, to create the striking LED sculpture as part of the city's <a href="http://www.mta.info/mta/aft/">Arts for Transit</a> initiative.
