The temporary open air performance space will be constructed completely out of shipping pallets, which will serve as the building material, structural system, and stage. Theater architect Jacques Plante envisioned the project as a way to re-use industrialized objects in a creative artistic context. His plan is to take the shipping pallet, an ubiquitous object with great utility, and use it in an innovative and surprising way to create an ephemeral opera house.

Plante is working with Engineer Pascale Pierre to create the immense architectural, aesthetic, and acoustic sound box. The project’s tectonic assembly will need to be carefully considered in order to create a space that is both aesthetically appealing and acoustically viable. The Pallet Opera will be constructed in the summer of 2011 in the courtyard of the Music Academy of Quebec City, next to the city’s principal theater.
