X, or three Xs to be more exact, will be marking the spot in Times Square starting this week. Designed by architect Juergen Mayer H., who is best known for the Metropol Parasol in Seville, Spain, XXX Times Square with Love is a new installation that will bring three X-shaped magenta loungers to the popular pedestrian plaza as a cheeky tribute to the tourist area's X-rated past. Commissioned by Times Square Arts, the giant seats are set to debut on Wednesday, August 24th on Broadway between 43rd and 44th Streets.
XXX Times Square with Love is a play on Times Square’s formerly sordid image, as well as the “X”-like shape of the intersection of Broadway and 7th Avenue, the two streets that form the plaza. The loungers are the first specially-commissioned ongoing street furniture for the new Times Square plazas.
In addition to being a spot where locals and tourists can take a load off, the loungers will create a unique photo opp for visitors. Since the outdoor couches, which can fit up to four people each, allow you to lie down almost totally horizontally in the middle of one of the busiest places in the city, they offer a perspective of the location’s tall buildings that most people usually never see.
“Lying down on XXX allows for a completely different perception of Times Square and its media presence,” said Juergen Mayer H. “The view goes vertical while you are broadcast via many of the public webcams of Times Square looking down on you. And besides your new perspective on the skyline, you might want to snap a selfie of yourself relaxing to share your XXX with friends and family.”
XXX Times Square with Love will be unveiled to the public on Wednesday, August 24th.
