NYC arts lovers are in for a treat as construction on The Shed, a project that is being hailed as New York’s most innovative center for artistic invention, is now underway. If you can’t wait for the much-anticipated building’s 2019 completion date, Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group, recently released a “fly through animation” sneak peak of the 200,000-square-foot space. Although construction on the project, which is located on Manhattan’s west side where the High Line meets Hudson Yards, has only just begun, people are already buzzing about the creative new space. The six-level arts venue will boast a massive purpose-built design for NYC’s vibrant arts scene with 25,000 square feet of “museum-quality space,” a 500-seat theater, rehearsal and event space, and a free experimental lab for artists.
According to its website, The Shed is designed to be a “radically flexible” performative structure that can operate in various configurations to accommodate a wide range of artistic performance styles and multi-disciplinary work. The flexible configuration includes the ability to expand and contract the building’s “telescoping shell” in order to provide options for outdoor programming.
“The Shed is uniquely of and for the 21st century, a new cultural institution that can respond to artistic and technological advancements of our time,” said Daniel L. Doctoroff, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Shed. “Uniting the uniquely flexible functionality of the building with Alex Poots’ vision for commissioning ambitious new work is a powerful concept that can help to enhance New York’s position as a global cultural hub while anchoring New York’s new West Side.”
The project is currently under construction on West 30th Street between 10th and 11th avenues, and slated to open in the spring of 2019.
