The ultra-thin townhome in Murray Hill is actually one of a pair of brownstones at 115 East 35th Street. The well preserved exterior contains an equally ornate interior that Patricia Nix renovated and redecorated herself. Although it’s only 11’4″ wide, the home has five stories plus a basement for a total of 3664 sq ft, so we can’t exactly call this a small home. But the skinny townhouse still has a slender footprint and loads of history as well.
Originally built in the 1850s for arts patron extraordinaire Isabella Stewart Gardner, the townhouse has always been a home for artists. Actors Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy were also said to have lived there. There’s space for a large studio on the fourth floor, an elevator, a basement for storage and 4 bedrooms. Filled with natural light on both sides and a skylight over the stairwell with light reaching all the way to the first floor, the skinny home doesn’t really feel all that cramped. With the use of the balcony, the sunroom and garden, you’ll still have plenty of space in this slender home.
