Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is a gorgeous display of red, yellow, orange and pink cliffs that has visitors marveling at nature. It means even more to geology aficionados, as it’s a staircase of flora and fauna fossils dating back between 50 and 275 million years. But however you look at Utah’s Grand Staircase, it’s all about being outside. And the new Under Canvas Lake Powell-Grand Staircase offers glamping accommodations in this area with some of the best views one could ever imagine.
The property boasts 50 safari-style canvas tents on elevated decks perched on the edge of Canyon Rim Plateau. West Elm furnishings keep the aesthetic natural, with weathered raw wood and leather that fit with the desert landscape. The spacious tents have king-sized beds, private bathrooms, lounge areas and wood-burning stoves. If guests want more company, they can hang out in the lobby lounge tent and chat, read books or find somebody to play a board game with. The camp sits on 220 acres with views of Lake Powell and endless desert. There’s an onsite slot canyon as well as dining options. Guests even have the luxury of charging their phones while roasting s’mores over a fire pit. Ordinary camping just can’t compare.
Top things to do while visiting Grand Staircase-Escalante are hiking and exploring slot canyons. The Calf Creeks Falls Trail is the No. 1 hike and involves passing by high cliffs before ending at a glorious waterfall —unexpected in the desert. Under Canvas is only 14 miles from the main Lake Powell Marina. About 3 million people visit the lake every year for boating, kayaking, water-skiing and swimming. Visitors who want some help planning their desert adventures can contact the Under Canvas team to arrange UTV tours and float trips. Guests can also chill onsite with programs ranging from yoga to painting to live acoustic music.
Under Canvas Lake Powell-Grand Staircase is the newest installment of Under Canvas’ glamping locations. Its season runs from April through October this year. The first Under Canvas opened in West Yellowstone in 2012. Other Under Canvas locations include Glacier in Montana; Moab and Zion in Utah; Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee; Mount Rushmore in South Dakota; Grand Canyon in Arizona and Acadia in Maine.
