When the Beach Met the Bay recalls the night that Hurricane Sandy submerged most of Long Beach’s homes in four feet of water. The water has since receded, but many residents are still trying to rebuild their lives. As a tribute to them, and a creative way to activate the community’s youth, the NY-based artist had the kids collect thousands of plastic caps that would otherwise have entered the local waterways.
She then supervised the placement of these plastic caps on a wall in West Long Beach. Over a period of 30 days, a handful of the youth helped to place, drill and then rivet these colorful caps on galvanized steel plates. The resulting mosaic, which was sponsored by Project Vortex, will remain permanently in place as a constant reminder of the night the beach met the bay.
