The greenhouse garden portion of the building is made of polycarbonate and aluminum to help let in light throughout the day. The attached kitchen classroom is clad in multi-colored, pixelated patterns formed by low-cost shingles. There are also porthole windows and circular skylights to naturally light the interior for student chefs.
From the outside, the building also has a “System Wall” at the rear adorned in a bright rubber coating. The wall acts as a cistern combined with the building’s sloped roof to create a rain catchment system for watering the plants.
The kitchen classroom provides space for up to 30 students to prepare and enjoy meals made with vegetables harvested directly from the school’s organic garden. Edible Schoolyard NYC’s professional garden and kitchen teachers will be offering experiential classes in addition to P.S. 216’s everyday curriculum.
