Looking for a healthy, seasonal snack? Try your hand at making your own crispy, cinnamon-scented organic apple chips by following these four simple steps: just slice, sprinkle, and bake! Farmer's markets across the country are bursting with fall produce – cooking with the freshest fruits of the season is a great way to enjoy eating seasonally, even if you live in an urban area far away from farms and orchards. Apples are a perennial fall favorite – from crisp, fresh slices of apple to pies, tarts, and cider – these Vitamin-C packed beauties can be found in abundance across the country at local markets. Apple chips make great snacks at work or school, and are delicious packed for a crisp fall picnic or hike.
    1
  • Step-One-Gather-Supplies
Here’s what you will need: -2-3 medium washed organic apples per baking sheet -baking sheets or trays -parchment paper -cutting board -knife -cinnamon and sugar (optional) Prepare your oven by heating it to 225 degrees Fahrenheit.
    2
  • Step-Two-Thinly-Slice-Apples
We used some fresh, tart heirloom Belle de Boskoop apples from the local farmer’s market. For making apple chips, it’s especially important to choose organic since you will be slicing the apples whole, including the skin – where sprays and other chemicals are most likely to collect.
    3
  • Step-Two-Part-Two-Slice-Apples
Step One: Using a sharp knife, carefully slice the whole apples into thin rounds. As you cut, simply remove the stem and seeds, which should fall out onto the cutting board, and discard.
    4
  • Step-Three-Sprinkle-Apples-With-Cinnamon
Step Two: Place a sheet of parchment paper on a baking sheet and arrange the raw apple slices. Sprinkle the slices with cinnamon, and with a dash of optional sugar (you don’t need it for sweetness, but we found that it helps make the chips a bit crispier).
    5
  • Step-Four-Bake-Apple-Slices
Step Three: Bake the apple chips at 225 degrees F for approximately two hours. For best results, set your time in half-hour increments and flip the chips over to ensure they crisp evenly. Since all ovens differ, you may need slightly more or less time – the simplest way to see if your chips are done is to do a taste test!
    6
  • Finished-Cinnamon-Apple-Chip
Admire your freshly baked apple chips with a star-shaped center that forms naturally due to the shape of the core.
    7
  • Enjoy-A-Bowl-Of-Homemade-Apple-Chips
Dish up a bowl of apple chips and pass them around!
