Birkegade Rooftop Penthouse-JDS ArchitectsRooftops are all too often overlooked when it comes to home design, but thanks to advances in green roofs and the need to maximize space in denser areas, the fifth facade is finally getting the respect it deserves. If you're a parent raising kids in a city, you are likely to turn green with envy over this private rooftop park and playground built on top of a turn-of-the-century building in the Nørrebro neighborhood of Copenhagen. Designed by JDS Architects, the Birkegade Rooftop park features lounge space for adults, a playground for kids and a rolling grassy lawn all contained safely within a chain link fence.1
Birkegade Rooftop Penthouse-JDS ArchitectsJDS Architects designed a set of three penthouse apartments and on top of them placed a 1,000 sq meter rooftop terrace for the residents' use.2
Birkegade Rooftop Penthouse-JDS ArchitectsThe firm's idea was to create a "missing garden" above the apartments to provide a private and safe place to play and enjoy the outdoors.3
Birkegade Rooftop Penthouse-JDS ArchitectsOf course, not everyone has $1.3 million to pimp out their roof with a playground, a grassy knoll and a sun deck, but hey, we're not jealous, much.4
Birkegade Rooftop Penthouse-JDS ArchitectsThe kids and adults alike are already enjoying the shock absorbing and bright orange playground space, the rolling staircases and the lookout point on top of the access staircase5
Birkegade Rooftop Penthouse-JDS ArchitectsThere's even supposed to be a suspension bridge somewhere in the mix.6
Birkegade Rooftop Penthouse-JDS ArchitectsIt seems a little surprising that there isn't a shady zone, but then again, when it's sunny in Copenhagen, you probably just soak as much in as you can.7
