Landscape planning firm Basic City A+U has designed a self-sufficient city of the future, called Nowa Huta for a site outside of Krakow, Poland. Combining urban areas with agricultural plots, the landscape would allow residents to harvest their own food supply for years to come. The Nowa Huta proposal reinvents the former industrial land into a sustainable community of the future.

Located next to a thriving river, Nowa Huta’s lands are fertile and well irrigated, making it a prime location for agricultural production.

To maximize the land’s potential, Basic City A+U partnered with Felixx Landscape Architects to redesign the city into an area showcasing self-sufficiency, nature and a healthy lifestyle.

The vacant industrial landscape would be reworked, implementing a fertile seedbed for the city’s crops to take root.

Respecting the historic villages of the Polish countryside, the city would mesh its historic aspects with modern innovations and green technologies that focus around sustainability.

The agricultural sectors that are interspersed throughout the city would not only supply the residents with farm fresh foods, but also employ the local agricultural expects. The urban centers would bring goods and services to the people, as well as subsequent jobs. Bordering the agricultural and urban sectors would be lush park like spots where locals can immerse themselves in nature, enjoying the landscape.

The Utopian plan could realistically be a sustainable plan that would ensure longevity for the post-Industrial land that has been victim to pollution and disuse.
