Leroy Street Studio’s Louver House is an Airy, Daylit Barn-Shaped Home

Fusing a modern home with the traditions of barn raising, the <a href="http://www.leroystreetstudio.com/index.php?page=selected&amp;work=louver-house">Louver House</a> in Long Island combines the massive presence of a barn with an open and airy transparency. Designed by New York’s <a href="http://www.leroystreetstudio.com" target="_blank">Leroy Street Studio</a>, the house's exterior skin is comprised of a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/j-mayer-hs-space-age-quartier-m-to-transform-an-unused-area-of-dussledorf/" target="_blank">series of louvers</a>, which let natural light flood the interior, while also providing privacy for the residents. At night, interior light shines through the louvers, creating a warm glowing structure that is joined by several “out” buildings and interior gardens to form one unified compound.

The stunning <a href="http://inhabitat.com/airy-foster-loop-cabin-in-washington-state-is-a-high-flying-low-impact-home/" target="_blank">barn-like home</a> sits atop a lush plot that overlooks a corn field, not far from the Atlantic shoreline. The entire Louver House is a series of continuous outdoor and indoor spaces, unified by the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louver" target="_blank">louver skin</a> and rain siding.

Five outdoor courtyards and gardens are arranged around the interior living areas under the peaked roof. A massive gray stone fireplace, met with a glass wall of doors, separates the main living area with the outdoor porch.

Playing up on the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/we-talk-with-tracen-gardner-of-reclaimed-space-about-prefab-building-salvaging-materials/" target="_blank">barn shape</a>, the architects created an interior with an open plan that has extraordinarily high exposed beam ceilings.

The roof is lined with a strip of skylights that continues down the peak of the entire ceiling, casting a dramatic light that moves around the interior throughout the day.

The living area, dining room, and kitchen ceilings all rise two stories to further the home's openness, while a mezzanine area houses the private bedrooms, as well as a viewing area to look out over the nearby coast.

The mezzanine also features a cozy study, a contrast from the openness of the rest of the home, and opens onto its own <a href="http://inhabitat.com/beirut-wonder-forest-could-infuse-the-lebanon-capital-with-some-much-needed-greenery/" target="_blank">private roof garden</a> with superior views.

Aside from living areas, the structure houses a custom woodshop that also has indoor and outdoor areas, as well as a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/dowling-studios-westside-road-residence-is-an-experiment-in-green-living-prefab-design/" target="_blank">lap pool for exercise</a>.

The Louver House is a network of mixed use spaces, seamlessly blending the interior with the outdoors.
