The team’s design provides a new use for existing drill pipes, using them to pull up water, rather than oil, to be stored in a spherical tank. The narrow and long capillary tubes have the power to raise water vertically and harnesses a natural phenomenon that doesn’t require a separate energy source. Amazingly, the water movement will even generate enough energy that it can be channeled and used for the site’s facilities.

The out of commission drill points would also be used to create space for labs, lodging and management space focused on studying the marine eco-system. The concept sees the structures spread out across the ocean and to also aid in lowering the sea level and mitigating the effects of CO2 and global warming.

This clever reclamation and reuse of drill ships speaks volumes for green innovative design, first by addressing the environmental costs of oil drilling, the subsequent CO2 emissions resulting from the oil, and of course the water issues facing the world’s population today.

    sorry guys, it won’t work. Capillary tubes can raise water but it won’t drip out of them. Actually it will take more energy to release the water from the tube than it would take to lift it. If it wasn’t so, we would have no shortage of clean renewable energy as water turbines driven by capillary action would provide free power for all. We don’t have that, because the laws of thermodynamics also applies here.

    This is an awesome concept that will result in a sustainable water supply to 3rd world countries who have underdeveloped water supply and sanitation facilities. Another benefit of this idea is to maintain sea-levels, as the extra water from the melting ice caps will be consumed and also salination levels in the ocean will be kept in equilibruim which will also positively affect weather, etc. Well done to those geniuses who came up with this brilliant idea, they deserve a nobel prize in my opinion!

    Hi caeman, With a little scientific knowledge it’s not a contradiction. Permafrost contains captured carbon dioxide, trees are just an indicator that permafrost is warming releasing that carbon dioxide. So, it’s not the trees that cause global warming, as a matter of fact, the trees themselves reduce the effect of the permafrost decomposition. In general, however, as we all learned in second grade, plants turn carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into oxygen which is not a green house gas. At the same time the cell structure of plants sequester carbon until decomposition. Since trees are relatively long lived, and wood is relatively slow to decompose, it is a very good way to sequester carbon.

    Um, according to another article about the advancing of northern forests in Canada into open tundra, global warming would increase. This article now says that more trees will lessen global warming.
