Cut Architecture Chaville ExtensionWhat do city dwellers with limited land do when they want to add an extension to their homes? <a href="http://cut-architectures.com/" target="_blank">Cut Architectures</a>' have come up with a striking solution for this Parisian home. The French firm added an <a href="http://inhabitat.com/the-airy-house-creates-a-gorgeous-gleaming-structure-housing-a-cafe-and-residence/" target="_blank">open and airy </a>music room to the client’s home by <a href="http://inhabitat.com/keret-house-warsaws-narrowest-home-will-be-set-within-this-tiny-alley/" target="_blank">suspending</a> it between the house and an adjacent building.1
Cut Architecture Chaville ExtensionThe square <a href="http://inhabitat.com/modern-parasite-office-hangs-between-two-buildings-in-moscow/" target="_blank">addition</a> creates a serene practice space for the client- a cello player. The addition hangs like a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/urban-woods-a-parasitic-wood-exoskeleton-which-will-soon-be-covered-in-ivy/" target="_blank">parasite</a> between the client’s and neighbor’s homes.2
Cut Architecture Chaville ExtensionA giant plate glass window lines almost the entire front of the room, drenching the room with light while creating the illusion that the room is bigger than it is. The concrete room is framed by a skew geometric shape in the front of the house, and a smaller rectangular window along the bottom of the back of the room. The interior of the practice space is covered in a smooth anondized aluminum, for acoustics.3
Cut Architecture Chaville ExtensionThe floor of the addition has a dual benefit, subsequently creating a carport/garage in the driveway below. Cut attached textured aluminum doors to the front and back of the space below.4
Cut Architecture Chaville ExtensionWhen closed it creates a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/lzt-architects-create-a-colorful-haven-out-of-a-dark-garage-in-austin/" target="_blank">garage space</a>, but completely opened, the space under the addition becomes a sheltered outdoor space, which opens into the backyard garden.5
Cut Architecture Chaville ExtensionTo match the new addition, Cut Architects made a few renovations to the existing 1920s home. They removed <a href="http://inhabitat.com/kodaira-shi-is-a-toyko-residence-covered-in-a-tent-to-create-a-private-shaded-garden/" target="_blank">hanging ceilings</a> to reveal the gorgeous birch timber that supports the roofing. The rustic timber is highlighted with mezzanines that Cut painted in bright orange.6
Cut Architecture Chaville ExtensionThe new addition creates a rehearsal area that feels somewhat detached to domestic life, while allowing the client to practice without leaving her home- all made possible through a very <a href="http://inhabitat.com/parasitic-emergency-homes-can-be-implanted-onto-abandoned-buildings/" target="_blank">understanding neighbor</a>.7
