PICS: 1000s of Flowers Fill Spanish City Streets for Girona’s Colorful Springtime Festival

Every year the beautiful Catalan city of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girona">Girona</a> holds an annual flower festival to celebrate the spring, and this time, we were in town to snap some photos of the vivid streets littered with thousands of colorful buds. The spectacular show hosts creations by local artists, designers, and gardeners who build <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/flower-installation/">flower-based installations</a> across the city. Most of the narrow streets are transformed into cascades of flowers, and colorful sculptures are suspended between the stone buildings. Many of Girona's exhibits were more contemporary than others, such as a room of brightly-lit sunflowers contained within walls of cardboard boxes.

Many of the city's ancient ruins and public terraces were transformed using simple ideas.

Artists Ignasi Esteve and Marc Vicens created a simple wooden frame installation in the university plaza with just a red ladder leading between two grass-clad floors.

Displays of flowers in front of grand mirrors appeared double the size!

White straw hats were filled with white flowers within an enclosed courtyard.

This year's festival was evidently more humble than previous years, presumably due to decreased budget for the event.

Dozens of individual bottles each contained a single flower.

Hanging above one street was a floral web made from recycled plastic industrial materials.

Even the old castle of the city had been transformed for the festival.

Kitsch rose and lilly-filled rooms were some of the more traditional displays.

The steps of the cathedral was paved with grass and flowers.

Internal courtyards became secret spots during the festival.
