PREFAB FRIDAY: TKiT House almost complete

First iT House by Taalman Koch Architects, Taalman Koch, iT House, Interactive House, Prefab House, TKiT House

Real-iT-y Now…

The reality of prefab versus its promise has been a hot topic as of late. Last year, we wrote about the high-tech, interactive iT House when it was just a bit more than a glimmer in Taalman Koch Architecture’s eye. To refresh your memory, the TK iT House is an ambitiously “smart” prefab house that comes with a whole host of high-tech amenities such as radiant heat flooring, photovoltaic roof, and custom-designed vinyl panels to screen your glass walls. In short: its a high-tech prefab dream. Today, not one, but two of their sleek glass houses are set to shine on actual sites. In anticipation of their talk at this year’s Dwell on Design Conference, we thought we would catch up with them and find out how their best laid plans were coming to fruition.

This house is exactly what I would like. It seems that it was the foundation work that was the headache. So, I have a question- How would you like to build an 800 sq.ft. house to be placed on top of an existing 36′x22′ foundation on a roof in Manhattan, New York. You certainly would be the first. Of course, instead of bulldozers, we would have to get a crane…. but …. interested? Let me know.

  2. I am want to build a “green” house on a beautiful piece of land high on a cliff overlooking the long Island Sound that I own, surrounded by bamboo and huge boulders as my live/work base for AmericanYogini.com. Love this one. Any others you want to bring my attention to as I continue to research? Pre-fab and economical are key to me. Love a japanese and modern esthetique.
Thanks for any leads and info.

Love this house design and am following the construction blog. I am looking at a chunk of land in Joshua tree to purchase and am currently living in the Palm Springs area. I would love to see the house in person and have many questions. Good luck working out the kinks and I hope to add another iT house to the Hi-Desert.

Beautiful concept. Wonder how it would stand up to hurricane force winds and constant humidity here in the Caribbean? I wonder also if the glass panes are tempered (as debris in a hurricane becomes projectile matter).
