“Pure” Water Bottle Filters 99.9% of Bacteria with UV Light

While traveling through Zambia, Timothy Whitehead became perplexed with the issues surrounding purifying water — chlorine and iodine tablets abound, but it takes 30 minutes to finish the process and the water tastes terrible afterward. Enter his new invention, the Pure Water Bottle, which is capable of filtering soiled — completely gross and disgusting looking water — in 2 minutes flat. Whitehead used a combination of a 4 micron-sized water filter and a wind-up ultra violet light system to clean the water of 99.9% of its impurities.

nice twist on the steripen design. but really, this is nothing new, unless he’s managed to make it significantly cheaper than the steripen classic

I am posting this for people to be better informed.

I applaud the effort to use the crank charger for UV instead of general emergency lighting, and combining it with a manual pump filter makes a certain sale for all, me too.

But what is not said here concerns the UV aspect of this.

First, it is highly unlikely that the very short exposure time is adequate to perform the required function, but cranking it back up a couple times would accomplish this, so thats my first recommendation.

The second recommendation is that all reading this understand that the UV only disrupts the ability for what is in the water TO REPRODUCE ONLY.

I repeat for clarity, IT DOES NOT KILL ANYTHING !

Allow the water to sit for the full lifetime cycle of the types of organisms known in the area it gets used, and you have safe water to drink.

Drink it right away and you WILL still suffer from the amount of LIVE organisms that are in the water, period.

So, two thumbs way way up for the product,
shame on the misinforming advertising spin!

Used properly (Multiple crank\’s, let water sit…) and this is a wonderful device. :)
