Vo Trong Nghia’s Wind and Water Bar is Made Almost Entirely of Bamboo in Viet Nam

    Located right next to the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/bamboo-wing-is-a-sculptural-vietnamese-restaurant-immersed-in-water/vo-trong-nghia-vietnam-bamboo-wing-restaurant-1-2/" target="_blank">Wind and Water café</a> on an artificial lake near Hanoi, the Wind and Water bar is a thatched bamboo dome that uses wind and cool water from the lake for natural ventilation. Lightweight and flexible, bamboo is the main building material for most of <a href="http://www.votrongnghia.com/" target="_blank">Vo Trong Nghia's</a> designs, which provides an authentic experience of Vietnamese vernacular architecture amid Viet Nam’s rapid modernization.

    The Bar is an enclosed whole, accessible via stepping stones that connect it to the shore.

    The Wind and Water Bar is also used as a performance venue, facilitating local meetings, concerts, ceremonies and other public events.

    The decorative interior and discrete lighting create an intimate atmosphere and a tactile experience of the architecture.

    The opening on the top is 1,5m in diameter and enables evacuation of hot air from the inside of the building.

    Low-cost and versatile, bamboo is not only structurally efficient – it is one of the fastest-growing plants on the planet, which makes it a renewable and sustainable raw material.

    The main frame is built from 48 prefabricated units, each comprising several bamboo elements bound together.
