Gallery: Volkswagen’s Think Blue...

This luminous Volkswagen Beetle is a life-size work of art crafted by sculptor Haribaabu Naatesan from over 2,805 pieces of scrap. The detailed replica of the classic car is made from 800 spark plugs, 200 bottle caps, 60 mother boards, and an incredible array of other commonly discarded items - including audio cassettes, typewriters, pens, and barbeque sticks.

Haribaabu Naatesan created the Beetle art piece as part of Volkswagen’s Think Blue Campaign. The extensive assortment of trash was collected during Think Blue Clean Up drives undertaken by the German auto-engineering firm at various locations. The trash was then meticulously sorted and assembled by Natesaan and his team over the course of 16 days, as shown in this nifty time-lapse video.

The Mumbai-based artist works entirely in the medium of scrap, creating large-scale intricate sculptures with an intent to bring life to otherwise lifeless discarded objects.

The Think Blue Beetle is presently installed at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival in Mumbai, where it will be on display until February 12.
