Acapulco Bay BridgeCurrently, traffic around Acapulco Bay is basically one linear parking lot and getting from one end of the bay to the other requires a circuitous route and a lot of time. A bridge has been proposed to span the bay, but at 3 km in length, it will be a massive and expensive undertaking. Mexico City-based <a href="http://www.bunkerarquitectura.com/" target="_blank">BNKR Arquitectura</a> have proposed a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/parasitic-city-takes-over-decommissioned-italian-highway/">habitable bridge</a> in order to draw in private investment to make the project economically feasible. A core roadway would span the bay with triangular structures that would hold residential space. The bridge bases would house docks and to top it all off, a green roof would cover the paths with greenery.1
Acapulco Bay BridgeThe municipal government does not nor ever will have the funds to build a 3 km bridge across the bay, even though the region is sorely in need of it.2
Acapulco Bay BridgePrivate investment is needed in order to make the project a reality and developers could expand into a whole new type of real estate.3
Acapulco Bay BridgeA green roof covering the roadway creates new open space for tourists and residents.4
Acapulco Bay Bridge'Bay Condos' or 'Bridge Condos' could easily become the new hot place to be and hypothetically, tourists and wealthier residents would line up for on the water residences.5
Acapulco Bay BridgeThe roadway provides a new circulation route for cars.6
Acapulco Bay BridgeCurrently all traffic must go around the whole bay, which is often very busy and a virtual parking lot.7
Acapulco Bay BridgeBNKR Arquitectura proposes a 3 km habitable bridge with 700,000 sq meters worth of space for residences, roadways and public parks.8
Acapulco Bay BridgeScattered across the bay, bases would be built into the water, on which triangular towers would be erected.9
Acapulco Bay BridgeResidences, office and retail would be built into these structures. Then the roadway and parking areas would be contained in a core structure that spans the length of the bridge.10
Acapulco Bay BridgeOn top of the roadway, pedestrian and bike paths along with gardens and open space would be installed for public use. The bases would be converted to both private and public docks for watercraft and for visitors and residents to take advantage of the water.11
Acapulco Bay BridgeAcapulco would get the much needed traffic expander, residents could have the opportunity to live on the water and it would all get paid for - at least in theory. In reality, this habitable bridge is a massive infrastructure project, requiring diligent engineering, disaster-proof design (for earthquake and tsunami), and a ton of money.12
