This spacious home rises from the humble earth in Arizona and plays with gentle contours of the land. Designed by Jones Studio, the Lacey Residence is made from rammed earth and presents an interpretation of the sloping desert site, adding a visual layer of strata to the tan landscape. A closer look at the home reveals rock formation-like details that protrude from the earthen walls, as raw wood elements weather the intense sun.

The home is actually a series of smaller offset buildings lined closely together with breezeways connecting the interiors. The result is a very open and connected feeling to the landscape without any of the 4,000 square feet being exposed to the intense daytime sun.

At first glance the home looks like a single, level mass playing off the gently sloping landscape with the back drop of Papago Peak.

The floor to ceiling glass plays counter to the heavy walls.

Texture abounds with a minimal disturbance of the landscape beyond the walls.

The coolness is achieved in part by the sheer mass of the walls and the deep overhangs created by layers of small dimensional lumber shooing out from the roof.

If things do get too hot a quick dip in the lap pool should be sufficient.

The angular outcroppings of the walls are a truly sculptural expression and push the aesthetic quality of working with rammed earth as a materiel.
