Elegant Pirogovo Greenhouse Nurtures Organic Greens and Vegetables in Russia

  • Pirogovo Greenhouse Totan Kuzembaev Architects
    Built in the woods near the Klyazminskoe Lake in Russia, the simple and elegant Pirogovo <a href="http://inhabitat.com/the-globe-hedron-is-a-geodesic-greenhouse-for-urban-farmers/" target="_blank">greenhouse</a> seems to radiate warmth. The greenhouse was part of a larger building enterprise designed by <a href="http://www.totan.ru/en/workshop/totan/index.html" target="_blank">Totan Kuzembaev Architects</a> for Alexander Ezhkov, the owner of Pirogovo Resort. It was commissioned by the owner to grow healthy vegetables and greens for the rest of the resort.

    The greenhouse is a glass-faced volume with a pitched roof, consisting of a main growing area, the tambour and a porch.

    Most of its envelope was assembled from a stainless <a href="http://inhabitat.com/solar-glass-generates-power-through-your-windows/" target="_blank">glass system</a> that allows combining different support materials to bear the load of each façade fragment.

    The double structure becomes visible at night when the building turns on special phyto lamps, which are fastened at the bottom belt of the framework.

    At night the greenhouse becomes a complex structure that has a smaller house “inscribed” into a larger one.
