Green-Roofed House in Sikamino Rises From the Greek Landscape

This <a href="http://inhabitat.com/green-roof/">green-roofed</a>, angular home rises from the ground in Attica, <a title="Green Roofed House in Sikamino Peeks Out into the Greek Landscape" href="http://inhabitat.com/george-hlavacss-recycled-aluminum-zephyr-table-was-inspired-by-winds-from-the-mediterranean-sea/" target="_blank">Greece</a>. Designed by Athens-based <a title="Green Roofed House in Sikamino Peeks Out into the Greek Landscape" href="http://www.tensearchitecture.net/preview/" target="_blank">Tense Architecture Network</a>, House in Sikamino blends in with the arid landscape, almost disappearing. A green roof planted with helichrysum, rosanthemum, lavender and thyme keeps the home cool and provides residents with a wonderful place to relax.

Located on an elongated field surrounded by <a title="Green Roofed House in Sikamino Peeks Out into the Greek Landscape" href="http://inhabitat.com/cheap-cardboard-packaging-protects-one-of-the-worlds-most-expensive-olive-oils/" target="_blank">olive</a> trees, the House in Sikamino is 195 feet long.

The elongated home is set beneath a rhomboid roof, and half of its interiors are located underground.

A living space is set in the home's center, while bedrooms occupy the building's <a title="Green Roofed House in Sikamino Peeks Out into the Greek Landscape" href="http://inhabitat.com/londons-geothermal-sharp-tourist-information-point-recycles-rainwater/" target="_blank"> pointy edges.</a>

The home is made from cool reinforced concrete that is left exposed on the roofs and walls.

Blinds, metallic shutters, and the home's underground design protect the interior from the sun, and a rolling green roof mimics the nearby <a title="Green Roofed House in Sikamino Peeks Out into the Greek Landscape" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euboea" target="_blank">Euboea </a>mountains.

This residence was nominated for the 2013 <a title="Green Roofed House in Sikamino Peeks Out into the Greek Landscape" href="http://www.miesbcn.com/en/award.html" target="_blank">Mies Van Der Rohe Award</a>.
