Manhattan West Doubles Its Public Space Plans to Over Two Acres

Manhattan's <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/wp-admin/inhabitat.com/nyc/tag/hudson-yards">Hudson Yards</a> project has been getting much of the limelight on the borough’s west side, but there’s another development just a few blocks away that’s about to get <a href="http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2014/01/09/manhattan_west_will_have_twice_as_much_open_space.php">a whole lot bigger</a>. Brookfield, the developers of the <a href="http://www.manhattanwestnyc.com/">Manhattan West</a> complex, recently outlined plans to build two towers and a plaza that would expand the project from 1.3 acres (49,400 square feet) to 2.11 acres (91,725 square feet). The build was already slated to create a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/tag/pedestrian-walkway/">pedestrian strip</a> extending from 33rd Street to 31st Street but now it could also include a pathway extension originating on 31st Street to span between Dyre and Tenth Avenues.

The Manhattan West project originally called for the construction of two 65-story office towers along with a 60-story residential tower just a block away from the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/first-leed-gold-tower-at-hudson-yards-breaks-ground-in-manhattan/">under construction Hudson Yards</a>.

While that part remains unchanged, Brookfield wants to double the size of its open space.

The new <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/phase-1-of-times-square-reconstruction-completed-in-time-for-new-years-eve/">pedestrian pathway</a> would connect the site with another Brookfield property at 450 West 33rd Street.

The company plans to start renovating the platform this summer, after which construction on the towers will begin.

As the original proposal for the project has changed, <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/tag/community-board-4/">Community Board 4</a> will have to revisit the plan to address concerns over the upkeep of the public spaces.

<p>One of the included renderings of Manhattan West suggest the plaza will have an <a href="http://inhabitat.com/factory-turned-latvian-contemporary-art-museum/">event space</a> for activities such as showing Casablanca on a projector movie screen.</p>
