Olympia, Washington-based artist Chris Maynard uses individual feathers to create images of large flocks of birds. Using eye surgery scissors, forceps, scalpels, and magnifiers to cut and carve the feathers, Maynard creates intricate feather cutouts that rise up an inch or so off the background to create shadows. The feathers retain their natural three-dimensional shapes and original colors. Maynard’s pieces ponder qualities inherent in feathers and birds, like flight, growth, transformation and beauty.
