Bertjan Pot’s Rope Masks Are Both Beautiful and Terrifying

Dutch designer<a title="Bertjan Pot´s Rope Masks Are Beautiful Yet Terrifying " href="http://www.bertjanpot.nl/" target="_blank"> Bertjan Pot</a> creates all sorts of things—from products to furniture and installations. But what he's really into is materials experimentation. For his 'Masks' project, Pot started stitching standard ropes in an attempt to create colorful, flat <a title="Bertjan Pot´s Rope Masks Are Beautiful Yet Terrifying " href="http://inhabitat.com/jo-meesters-turns-old-woolen-blankets-into-blooming-floral-carpets/" target="_blank">carpets</a>. But the samples he was sewing started to get curvy, and just when he was about to give up, he decided to turn them into these delightful yet terrifying masks!

To make his masks, Bertjan Pot uses all sorts of ropes, combining colors and creating innovative textures.

He stitches them together using a sewing machine, which in turn creates a waved surface.

Each mask has its very own color palette and style—some are more human, some are more animal, and some are very abstract.

Delightful, surprising, and totally bizarre, each mask is one-of-a-kind. Pot says he meets "new faces" everyday while producing these masks.

We think they are great designs that give users a chance to become somebody else, even just for a little while.

We originally spotted these wonderful creations at last year's Dutch Design Week in the city of Eindhoven, where Pot won the MINI Young Designer Award under the Best Autonomous Design category.
