Century-old Townhouse in Germany Renovated into Modern Daylit Home

This beautiful townhouse in Heidelberg, Germany was built in 1906 and went through several renovations since. The latest <a href="http://inhabitat.com/whale-shaped-glass-atrium-resurrects-historic-warehouses-in-budapest/" target="_blank">renovation</a> was done by <a href="http://www.radiusplus.de/standorte.php" target="_blank">Radius Ingenieure</a>, who transformed the once classical bourgeois residence into a modern <a href="http://inhabitat.com/the-spence-house-boasts-soaring-ceilings-and-cascading-natural-light/" target="_blank">daylight-filled home</a>.

The red sandstone mansion was redesigned to achieve an elegance of simple geometric forms and minimalist design.

While keeping the overall shape of the building, the architects have covered it with a flat roof and introduced new organization and contemporary materials to the interior.

The focus of the living space is a 4x4.5m multi-functional cube upholstered with a cream-colored fabric.

The cube features a built-in fireplace, hidden workspace and bookshelves, along with a large pantry facing the kitchen.

Besides determining the overall mood of the space, the cube also has an important role in the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/buffalo-bayous-subterranean-cistern-could-become-an-underground-performance-venue/" target="_blank">acoustic performance</a> of the building.

The interior spaces are bathed in sunlight.

Right next to the cube is a multi-functional structure that incorporates a large sofa – a contemporary reading of the traditional living room cabinet.

The 144 square meter ground floor provides excellent views of the garden and amplifies the connection to the exterior.

Soft-edged furniture and materials are complimented with stripped wooden floors, adding to the coziness of the space.

The renovated building offers a healthy and harmonious living space, leaving much room for fun.
