The first Chevy Volt was first unveiled in 2008, and the second-generation vehicle improves upon the original design in almost every way. The 2016 Volt can travel 50 miles in all-electric mode (vs 38), and it’s 120 pounds lighter, thanks to improvements in motor and battery technology. The new 18.4 kWh battery is both lighter and more powerful, reaping increased capacity from fewer cells (192 instead of 288).
The Volt still produces 149 horsepower, however it features a new high-efficiency 1.5L 4-cylinder engine and its acceleration is noticeably improved—its 0-60 time of 8.4 seconds is 7 percent better, and its 0-30 time of 2.6 seconds is 19 percent better. The 2016 Volt also features an exterior and interior refresh (it now seats five passengers), a stronger body, a quieter ride, and a new braking system.
