The devastating 2010 flood in Pakistan destroyed houses across the country, leaving 6 million people homeless—primarily those in the poorest regions. Since the cost of basic building materials is so exorbitant, it’s nearly impossible for these people to rebuild their homes, unless they want to sell their land or go into life-long debt securing a loan. The Earth Home Project aims to help people people their own flood-resistant, traditional homes using sustainable, locally available materials such as bamboo, straw, earth, and lime. Thanks to donations, Earth Home Project can cover the cost of tools, concrete for stronger foundations, and wood for window and door frames, if necessary. Training is provided to craftspeople and neighbors, with the goal of enabling people to prepare for extreme weather, and empowering them with the knowledge and skills to rebuild their communities.
