Every year, we look forward to the FIGMENT Festival, which brings a weekend of free participatory art to Governors Island. This week, the festival announced a sparkling selection of 2013 pavilion finalists - all made from recycled and reused materials. There are many amazing projects to choose from, like Jason Klimoski and Lesley Chang’s “Head in the Clouds” seen above, so choosing the winner will not be an easy task!

“Fodder Form Pavilion,” by HuycKurlanDowling, is the only edible entry in the contest. Made from plant starches, the giant block is slowly eaten away by goats or ponies, creating a shady grotto for human visitors to enjoy.

• Figment MTWTHFSS
Ed Blumer and Pete Storey designed “For Rent” under the name MTWTHFSS. The premise of their pavilion is borrow instead of buy. “For Rent” is made entirely from rented materials suspended on a crane. Visitors can relax beneath the adjustable canopy that changes shape as the crane is moved. After, the pieces are returned to the respective vendors, yielding zero waste.

• Figment Maria Mingallon
Using toilet paper and cardboard tubes, Maria Mingallon’s “Enneper Pavilion,” transforms the rolls into an undulating organic shaped pavilion that provides both shade and shelter from rain.

• Figment Cloud in a tree
The final entry also plays on the idea of clouds, called “A cloud, in a Tree,” by SAMPLES. Suspended from one of the island’s grand trees, the canopy, made from recycled boat sails, provides a suggested pavilion. Without walls, the cloud-sail gives shade, while giving uninterrupted views of the island and adjacent skyline.

The five designs will be under a jury’s scrutiny, having a chance to respond to critiques before submitting final proposals at the end of September.

From a cloud hanging from a tree, to a wave of recycled toilet paper tubes, deciding a finalist for the City of Dreams Pavilion will be a tough task for the lucky jury.
