“We are very excited to extend the life of HeartBeat by transforming it into HeartSeat, a public seating sculpture that, after its time in Times Square, will become part of a public space in New York,” said Stereotank architects Sara Valente and Marcelo Ertorteguy.
The original Heartbeat sculpture was the winner of the Times Square Alliance and the Architectural League of New York’s annual Valentine Heart design competition and has been engaging visitors to Times Square with its interactive drums since the beginning of February. Now that Valentine’s Day has come and gone, the installation will be rearranged to form a public bench for Armory Arts Week.
“Physically and conceptually, the idea of ‘opening’ the heart of Times Square to provide public seating delightfully expands the program of the Times Square Valentine Heart to engage and even embrace the public,” said Anne Rieselbach, Program Director of The Architectural League of New York.
