Highpoint Shopping Centre-Grimshaw ArchitectsHere in the US, <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nations-oldest-indoor-shopping-mall-being-renovated-into-micro-apartment-building/" target="_blank">malls are being renovated</a>, but in Melbourne, Australia the <a href="http://www.highpoint.com.au/" target="_blank">Highpoint Shopping Centre</a> is a model of a new generation of retail destinations. Recently completed by <a href="http://grimshaw-architects.com/" target="_blank">Grimshaw Architects</a>, the Maribyrnong shopping centre is light & airy with an ETFE roof that also works to collect rainwater. The whole project was designed around environmental and social sustainability strategies to create a meaningful public realm and to celebrate fresh air and daylight.1

Highpoint Shopping Centre-Grimshaw ArchitectsInspired by both organic forms and contemporary art galleries, the shopping centre is filled with bright natural daylight. <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/ETFE">ETFE</a> is used on the roof to create translucent and lightweight skylights that bring light down through all the levels.5
