Helix unveils “world’s best folding bike” that folds down to the size of its wheels

<a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/folding-bike" target="_blank">Folding bikes</a> are one of the greatest ways to solve the last mile problem—the logistical challenge of getting commuters to and from public transportation stops. Unfortunately, many people write folding bikes off because of their reputation for being heavy, uncomfortable, and bulky. Canadian company <a href="http://www.ridehelix.ca" target="_blank">Helix Folding Bikes</a> hopes to change all that with Helix, an innovative cycle that can fold down to the size of its wheels!

Thanks to its innovative design, the bike folds down to a size just slightly wider than the crankset.

The bike wheels rotate on helical hinges and can fold beside the frame and between the cranks.

“Helix is the easiest folding bike in the world to fold and unfold,” write the designers. “Unlike any other folding bike, Helix can be folded in any order without having to rotate the pedals.”

Designed to be smaller, lighter, safer, and easier to use than any other folding bike on the market, Helix is made of durable titanium and weighs in at just 21 pounds.

Each Helix bike will be handmade in Toronto, Canada and constructed with high-quality materials, machinery, and processes to ensure long-term durability and safety.

Helix will be available for pre-order on Kickstarter in early March starting at $1,199 and shipping will start in late July 2015.
