JetBlue’s new green initiative is a collaboration with GrowNYC Partners, a nonprofit that promotes local agriculture projects. The airline is also working on cultivating its garden with help from chips producer Terra. The JetBlue farm is expected to grow more than 1,000 pounds of blue potatoes per harvest that will eventually be used to make the Terra Blue chips served on JetBlue flights. Additionally, the airline plans to give some of the farm’s harvest to T5 restaurants, and will also donate herbs and produce to local food pantries.
The project’s launch was quite complicated as one of the major concerns with installing the garden at the terminal was attracting local wildlife to the airport grounds. It took the airline three years to get approval for the farm, eventually choosing specific plants that would deter birds and other animals.
Sophia Mendelsohn, the airline’s head of sustainability, remarked on the uniqueness of the highly-anticipated green space at the terminal. “An airport seems like an unexpected place for a farming experiment, but what better way to explore our role in the food cycle than to harvest right in our own back yard at JFK?”
