Jonathan Rose’s Micro-Apartment Complex Balances Tiny Living Spaces with Ample Communal Areas

As Mayor Bloomberg announced the results of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/bloomberg-announces-winners-of-the-adapt-nyc-competition-to-develop-micro-unit-dwellings/">New York City’s adAPT NYC Competition</a> last week, the team of <a href="http://www.rosecompanies.com/">Jonathan Rose Companies</a>, <a href="http://www.cplusga.com/">Curtis+Ginsberg</a>, <a href="http://grimshaw-architects.com/">Grimshaw</a>, Scape and <a href="http://www.lifeedited.com/category/architecture/">LifeEdited</a> shared in the excitement of being a finalist. Their submission entitled “CO: Compact, Connected, Complete” proposed a 60-unit apartment building full of micro-apartments of 303 square feet each. This submission was one of many that took on the challenge to create more housing units for one- and two-person households in light of the space restrictions and urban density of NYC.

Designed by a team led by developer Jonathan Rose Companies, this proposed a modern apartment building features three unit options of 303 square feet for small space city living.

Each apartment comes with a bathroom, kitchen, convertible bed, and a balcony.

The designs are elegant and straight-forward showing a level of thoughtfulness when it comes to the building’s cost-effectiveness and sustainability.

Communal spaces can be found throughout the building, which also add to the building’s thoughtfulness.

Micro-apartments continue to <a href="http://inhabitat.com/san-francisco-joins-the-micro-apartment-craze-and-approves-220-square-foot-units/">grow in acceptance</a> across the United States, and this competition shows the growth through a variety of designs.

The team member LifeEdited had a <a href="http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2012/05/17/sullivan_street_apartment_fits_1100_square_feet_into_420.php">recent micro-apartment</a> commended for its design, while Jonathan Rose Companies is well known for their work in New York City for sustainable housing.

The <a href="http://inhabitat.com/nyc/mayor-bloomberg-inaugurates-striking-stepped-via-verde-green-housing-complex-in-the-bronx/">Via Verde</a> apartment complex in the Bronx is one of the most striking designs in the push for sustainable housing in New York City.
