MASS Design Group Proposes PS1 Pavilion Made Completely Out of Recycled Materials

Even though the <a href="http://www.bustler.net/index.php/article/moma_ps1_maxxi_young_architects_program_2011_-_the_winners/">winners of MoMA's PS1 Young Architects Program</a> have been announced, we really liked the proposal from Boston-based <a href="http://inhabitat.com/harvard-graduate-students-complete-locally-constructed-rwandan-hospital/butaro-hospital-1/" target="_blank">MASS Design Group</a>. Looking for a temporary solution that would have a long lasting and positive impact on the community, they wanted to create a pavilion made completely out of recycled and recyclable materials. Titled, 'Bottle Service', MASS Design Group would involve collecting <a href="http://inhabitat.com/trash-temple-made-from-100-tons-of-recycled-plastic-bottles/" target="_blank">plastic water bottles</a>, covering them in recyclable Tyvek and stringing them up around the space to create a cool and refreshing summer experience.

When coming up with their proposal for the MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program, MASS DESIGN GROUP asked themselves: how can architects add the most lasting social and economic value to a place?

Their answer was to involve the public as much as possible and make use of recycled and recyclable materials.

Architecture, they said, "if choreographed well, can have lasting environmental, social and economic impact."

The proposal, Bottle Service, calls for the collection of 55,500 plastic water bottles, to be shrunk wrapped in Tyvek and then strung up around the outdoor space to create a canopy supported by prefabricated aluminum stage trusses.

But the fun doesn't stop though when the temporary pavilion would be taken down.

MASS DESIGN GROUP also set up partnerships with The Center for Architecture Foundation, Flux Factory, The East River Development Alliance, Dupont and EMECO.

At the end of the installation, the aluminum stage trussed would be recycled and the Tyvek would be sent back to Dupont where they would be recycled into plastic picnic tables.

Then the water bottles would be sent to EMECO (maker of the iconic Navy 111 chair) who would use the plastic to make a special edition, blue MoMA PS1 Bottle Service chair.

All proceeds from the sale of the chair would be donated to PS1 in Queens.

After learning all of this, we're left wondering why MoMA didn't like MASS DESIGN GROUP's proposal?
