Chickens have come to roost at P.S. 216’s Edible Schoolyard thanks to a new coop. The green elementary school classroom was already home to a plotted farm and greenhouse + kitchen, and now its flock of fine-feathered friends will help educate children about the life cycle of food. The school plans to use the fowl to teach students the importance of sustainable food.

This latest edition comes to the Eddible Schoolyard NYC (ESYNYC) courtesy of designers Just Food. The coop has already become home to a number of hens and chicks. Chickpea, Minnie, Scootaboo, Superwoman, and Momo (named after Momofuku, which is a major partner of the ESYNYC) are just a few of the feathered residents.

In addition to cuddling them, students will also be able to feed and care for the chickens as part of their gardening duties. One thing these chickens will never be a part of is a school lunch, but students will learn to cook with their fresh eggs. The ESYNYC is already an experimental classroom teaching pupils with a seed-to-table garden, and now the chickens will add one more to element by bringing in live animals to the equation.
