Aviator’s Villa Built From Salvaged Airplane Parts Simulates Life in the Clouds

After spending a lifetime in the air, it's no surprise that this retired pilot can’t settle for just any land-based dwelling. <a href="http://urbanofficearchitecture.com" target="_blank">Urban Office Architecture</a> reproduces the feel of living in the open sky with "Villa for an Aviator," a house built from <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/salvaged-airplane/" target="_blank">salvaged airplane</a> parts in New York state. To simulate the feeling of a plane in flight, the minimalist glass-covered abode is suspended on stilts between two bodies of water: a pool on one side and a small lake on the other.

Open to grand views on three sides, "Villa for an Aviator" comprises raised and stacked vertical volumes that mimic the motion of an ascending plane.

Rather than keep a plane's streamlined form, Urban Office Architecture reconstructs the aeronautical components into angular and twisted geometry, reminiscent of a Libeskind design.

A long driveway leads up the property, just like an airplane runway.

The house is made up of three primary spaces, starting with an open plan living and kitchen area with airy, 30 foot tall ceilings.

From there, the stairs wind up to a private office, bathrooms, and a cantilevered 40 foot bedroom surrounded by angular glazed windows that are shielded with perforated screens.

A library is accessible via a set of stairs that lead down from the cantilevered bedroom to a rectangular volume elevated on stilts.
