Maniac Pumpkin Carvers Create Spectacular and Spooky Jack-O-Lanterns in NYC

    Marc Evan and Chris Soria are two Brooklyn illustrators with a talent for gouging gourds. Sourcing locally grown pumpkins, the duo recreate classic horror movie posters, classic paintings, and commissioned pieces for clients across the globe. Click through our gallery for a gander.

    Every Halloween, fans can see examples of their work in storefronts and advertisements, order custom pieces, and watch live demonstrations of the carving process.

    New York Artists Marc Evan and Chris Soria began their pumpkin carving business, Maniac Pumpkin Carvers, eight years ago in an effort to tap the local bars and restaurants during autumn.

    What resulted was the start of an amazing relationship between craftsman and medium and a reputation that brought clients from such big names as Tiffany and Co., Honda, Rolling Stone, Citi, and Yahoo!.

    Each pumpkin is selected for even tone, symmetry, and a good stem. Using a variety of tools that include everything from saws to woodworking tools, the duo complete each work within 24 hours, treating the pumpkin with a special solution and sealing them in order to ensure the maximum life span.

    The Maniac Pumpkin Carvers recreate classic movie posters on gourds in celebration of Halloween.

    Marc and Chris offer a few helpful tips for amateur Jack-o-lantern carvers , including carving first (and scooping only when finished), using CFL bulbs to light, washing the pumpkin before carving, sealing with Vaseline or vegetable oil, and maintaining the stem to preserve nutrients and prevent rapid decay.
