New York climbing fans will soon be able to take advantage of the April 16th opening of DUMBO Boulders’ new outdoor bouldering gym located under the Manhattan Bridge. Once open, the 7,800-square-foot climbing gym, operated by The Cliffs at Long Island City, will be the largest outdoor bouldering gym in North America.
Already in place under the Manhattan Bridge at the Main Street section of Brooklyn Bridge Park, the gym’s bright blue walls are hard to miss. The public opening, which will be held on April 16th, will include instructional clinics, kid-friendly activities and various bouldering challenges for all skill levels.
“We’re excited to open to the public this April. DUMBO Boulders will offer a truly unique and exceptional outdoor climbing experience,” said Mike Wolfert, owner of The Cliffs. “We are thrilled to be a part of bringing this amenity to the community.
The space will be able to accommodate up to 250 people at a time and at $9 for a day pass, will be quite affordable. Additionally, rental shoes and chalk will be free with entry. However, for those novices who are interesting in trying climbing, be forewarned that there will be no harnesses available; just ultra-spongy flooring made of compacted rubber mulch.
The bouldering gym will be open to the public on April 16, followed by a formal grand opening celebration on May 7.
