The Salle Residence + Art Studio

In the late 1990s, artist David Salle purchased two derelict buildings in Brooklyn. Salle wanted to turn the 10,000 sq ft structures into a joint residence and private studio. He turned to “the artists’ architect” Christian Hubert to lead the rehabilitation, and Hubert teamed up with architect David Fratianne, working over two years making Salle’s dream a reality. Today, the buildings stands as one of the most iconic architectural works in Fort Greene. Among the home’s most stunning features are the artist’s floor-through studio, a third-floor bedroom with a garden-terrace on two sides, and a new zinc-covered roof that curves down to become the exterior wall of the three-story extension.

State Street Townhouse

Architect Ben Hansen’s State Street townhouse is a contemporary masterpiece located in one of Brooklyn’s most charming neighborhoods. This striking home features an open plan and high-ceilings reminiscent of California moderns. The architect designed the space to put the kitchen at the heart of the home. Upstairs, the couple’s three children share two bedrooms with a connecting bathroom, and this floor also finds access to a spectacular green roof that stores rainwater and nourishes the ground floor garden. Their backyard is another gem with its pair of swings, sandbox, and BBQ–perfect for gatherings during the warm months.

Dean Street Townhouse

The Dean Street townhouse was once a blight in the neighborhood of Boerum Hill. Dilapidated and structurally compromised, the 4,600 square foot home was not easy to bring up to code. Architect Clay Miller, of Bergen Street Studio, revived the property both inside and out. In his restoration, the architect wanted vegetation and glass rails to enliven the interior and details such as a green wall, garden, and expansive windows help the family connect with nature.
