Recycled Gecekondu Shelter at Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport Teaches Kids About Green Design

<a title="Recycled Gecekondu Shelter Landed Overnight at Tempelhof Airport Teaching Kids About Urban Planning and Crafts" href="http://gecekondu.mobi" target="_blank">'Gecekondu Landed Overnight'</a> is a series of temporary shelters that are made using recycled materials by members of Youth Art Neukölln, a local nonprofit organization in Berlin. Inspired by Turkish <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gecekondu">Gecekondu shelters</a>, which are put up quickly and without permission, this small structure appeared at Berlin's abandoned Tempelhof Airport overnight. No one knows how long it will last, but for the moment, it offers great workshops for kids to learn about woodworking, kite-making and even urban planning!

'Gecekondu Landed Overnight' is a group of temporary shelters and outdoors furniture, near the community garden at Tempelhof Airport.

The aim of the space is to provide an open-space for kids and youngsters to learn all sort of crafts using recycled materials like wood, tyres, pallets and banners.

The space is was made from donated scrap materials from creative scrap yard Kunst-Stoffe and some remainings from last year's Bread &amp; Butter, held at the nearby aiport's building.

Rough and ready, the recycled structures take random shapes and angled views, but the message is clear: 'this is not a dumping place for your rubbish'.

The kids from Youth Art Neukölln are still busy building new shelters, together with artists, social workers, architects and local people.

A really interesting project for kids in Berlin, this community-envisioned recycled project should land overnight taking by surprise kids and adults around the world.
