Striking Green-Roofed Concert Hall Sprouts in Soignies, Belgium

Soignies, Belgium recently unveiled a striking cultural center and concert hall complete with an expansive green roof. Spotted at <a href="http://www.designboom.com/weblog/cat/9/view/14916/lescaut-weinand-new-cultural-hall-in-soignies.html">designboom</a>, the project features a large <a href="http://inhabitat.com/spains-wood-clad-environmental-hq-is-a-green-gathering-place/new-1-37/">outdoor public theater</a> a multifaceted façade that is deeply influenced by the city's history. The hall was inspired by Soignies' local rock quarry - the facade takes on the angular quality of the local export, and the shape of the building corresponds with the winding angular streets that weave through the old city center.

Designed by <a href="http://www.weinand.be/">BE Weinand</a> and<a href="http://www.escaut.org/environment/soignies/"> L’Escaut Architects</a>, the project serves as a cultural center and a public venue.

The plan features a large plaza and outdoor amphitheater for concerts, and a gathering place to unwind or play games.

The exterior is clad in locally sourced blue stone and features <a href="http://inhabitat.com/green-roofed-light-house-stadium-is-a-beacon-of-light/">translucent walls</a>.

The facade reflects the obtuse angles of the old streets and the visual sequence of neighboring buildings

The top of the project is crowned with a <a href="http://inhabitat.com/green-roof/">green roof</a> that contributes to the natural texture of the design while reducing the need for active cooling.

The multiple points of entrance facilitate traffic from four distinct areas.

A large light-filled hall welcomes visitors into the interior, where the main <a href="http://inhabitat.com/stockholms-undulating-waterfront-centre-is-a-transforming-low-energy-venue/">performance space</a> seats from 400-600 people.

The stage is unusually large, which allows it to accommodate many types of performances.

The space features excellent acoustics that minimize exterior noises, while the exterior plaza frequently hosts performance, fairs, and public gatherings.
